Back to school support

It comes as no surprise to learn that people in our community are facing some tough financial times.

Between the soaring cost of living, rising interest rates and the near impossible rental market it’s no wonder that Cafs (Child and Family Services, Ballarat) is seeing an increase in demand for support from across the region.

The pending financial pressure of the festive season followed closely by the expense of getting children back to school will have many local families already wondering where they are going to find the money.

This year Cafs end of year campaign focus is firmly on giving the gift of education to local children and families experiencing hardship.

Wendy Sturgess, CEO, Cafs

Cafs is an entirely local organisation, so the focus of our work is to support families in our own community. Our teams currently have around 700 children, and by default their extended families, registered for assistance in the lead up to Christmas and the New Year

Wendy Sturgess, CEO, Cafs

We recognise that waking up to a gift under the Christmas tree is a lovely thing for one day, but we are wanting to direct tangible support to families to make sure that children can get back to school with everything they need at the start of the year. An education is the gift that will last a child a lifetime.

Wendy Sturgess, CEO, Cafs

Cafs are calling for financial donations, or the donation of gift vouchers of any denomination, which would enable families to purchase school necessities including basic uniform items, shoes, stationery, back packs and lunch boxes.

In our experience remaining engaged in an education setting keeps children connected with their peers, builds life skills and knowledge and ultimately leads to more positive outcomes for the future. Education has the power to break the cycle of disadvantage.
