Cafs (Child and Family Services Ballarat) is proud to support Gambling Harm Awareness Week 2025, running from 27 October to 2 November, by raising awareness of the hidden impacts of gambling harm and promoting the support services available to individuals and families across the Central Highlands region.
Every week, Ballarat loses $1.2 million to poker machines alone. An estimated 3.1 million adults experience gambling harm in Australia.
Gambling harm can affect anyone and not just the person gambling. It can impact relationships, mental health, financial stability, and the wellbeing of children and families. Cafs is committed to helping our community understand these impacts and access the support they need.
“Gambling harm is often invisible, but its effects are very real,” said Linda Borner, Team Leader, Financial and Gamblers Help at Cafs.
“The upcoming week is about breaking the stigma, sharing stories, and reminding people that help is available — and that it works,” Linda said.
In November, Cafs will host a special event for community leaders and changemakers featuring Rev. Tim Costello, a leading advocate for gambling reform, who will speak on the social impacts of gambling and the importance of community resilience.
