Help build a strong community: Cafs seeks Community Advisory Committee members

28 May 26

Child and Family Services Ballarat (Cafs) is inviting community members from across the Central Highlands region to help shape services for children, young people and families by joining its Community Advisory Committee.

The group plays an important role in Cafs’ governance by providing feedback, insights and community perspectives to help strengthen services, programs and organisational direction. Members act as a vital connection between Cafs and the broader community, offering local insight, testing ideas and ensuring services remain responsive to the needs of the region. Importantly, Cafs is encouraging people to consider the opportunity as a flexible and rewarding way to contribute, without a significant time commitment.

The Community Advisory Committee meets just four times a year, with each meeting running for around 90 minutes, making it a manageable commitment for people with work, study or family responsibilities. Cafs CEO Wendy Sturgess said the group plays a key role in ensuring the organisation continues to reflect and respond to the communities it serves.

“Our Community Advisory Committee gives local people a direct voice in shaping how our services are designed and delivered,” Ms Sturgess said.

It’s not a large commitment, but it is incredibly rewarding. Members tell us they value the opportunity to share their perspective, connect with others, and contribute to meaningful change in their community.

Cafs is seeking people from a broad range of backgrounds, particularly those who reflect the diversity of the Central Highlands region community. No specific experience is required, just a genuine interest in community wellbeing, an ability to listen and contribute constructively, and a commitment to supporting better outcomes for vulnerable children and families.

“You don’t need to be an expert to join,” Ms Sturgess said. “We’re looking for people who care about their community and want to be part of shaping a better future for local families.”

Membership of the Community Advisory Committee is voluntary, with an initial 12‑month term.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Share their perspective and lived experience
  • Provide feedback on programs and services
  • Contribute to discussions that inform decision-making
  • Strengthen connections across the community

Cafs encourage anyone interested or who knows someone who may be, to visit our open positions to learn more and apply.
